Auto Transmission Shifting 200 1981

My 1981 240 series, as well as having dim headlights, also shifts badly. The thing won't shift into higher gears until the engine is so high in RPM's it sounds like it's going to break. Sometimes if I mess with the shift selector it will advance gears, but usually not. Any ideas?
