seat heater - wiring questions 700 1992

Hi All,
After spending a while reading all the posts andFAQ on seat heaters I finally got around to them yesterday and had 2 questions. I've got power coming out of the relay after click and continuity thru the seatback heater but I am confused by the wiring to the bottom pad. There seems to be 2 wires to the seatback heating pad but 3 wires to the seat bottom one. Is this because they are using the thermostat in the bottom to trigger both pads and the third wire gives continuity to the back pad when the tstat is open?

Also, I saw some posts saying I could get to the tstat with seat in car - is this really possible? I have passenger seat unbolted and tipped back up on bricks - if I take it out and flip it over will all be revealed and I'll see the access to the tstat? Or do I have to release the springs and clips and peal back the leather to get to it? I may have this all wrong and I have ordered a Bentley's to spare you all basic questions in the future.
Thanks in advance,
Robb McC
