Spark, starting and grounding out. 120-130

So the other night I was checking the points and had them out to sand down the pitting so as to get a stronger plug spark, etc. When I put them back the way I remember them coming out (??!??) the engine would turn over but would not start. Then today when I tried with the remote starter switch (under the hood) I noticed a little spark emanating from the distributor post which, on the inside of the distributor holds the spring to the springy side of the two piece points and on the outside holds the leads from the coil and condenser.
Is this a sign that it’s grounding out? Does it have to do with the springy side of the points (along with the nuts and bolt that hold it) having to be insulated from the distributor caseinside and out? I mean what should I be doing in trying to fix it?
Thanks Bricksters, and Cheers to You All.
