Air Mass Sensor / Fuel Pump 200 1984

This is a great site! - especially for those of us in need of help.

i've got an '84 gl wagon that sounds great at idle, but loses almost all power under any load.
I've been told the Air Mass Sensor/Meter must be bad, and the valve in the air filter box was stuck open, (the car's in warm weather) but when i removed the Sensor, the filiment appears intact.
does that mean it's o.k?
is there anything else i should check?

the sensor is getting voltage (#9 terminal)
i can hear the fuel pump working, and feel the fuel pulsing. (but the tank is near empty)
i plugged in a new control unit, and no change.

thanks very much,
Jon S.
