Mystery keyless entry and alarm on 1990 240 200 1990

Hi...
I just bought another 240 that came equiped with an alarm/keyless entry...I never have had one before, but would like to find out about it before I dare use it...so far, the place I bought it from said something about the first button marked "I" opens and locks the doors and the button marked "II" engages the alarm...and you have to press it twice in the car to disengage the alarm...when I asked for more info...and if it worked, he said just don't use it. The mechanics that checked the car out said they know nothing about it, and to avoid problems, don't use it...
Research on the plain 2 button fob (with a working light-emitting diode) claims it's an Excalibur, K-9, Omega, or Mat whatever that means...and the vin# search makes no mention of an anti-thieft device added, so I have no idea when it was put on and have to assume the previous owner added it. I do know I can still buy extra fobs for it...but programming one is a mystery.
Where should I go to have this system checked out? I think it may have some kind of ignition cut off, so I really don't want to try it without having it tested and a professional nearby to cut it off if it fails in alarm mode.... YIKES!
I have been 20+ years in the big city without alarms on my various cars. However, I wouldn't mind the idea of arming the car considering the cars parked in my neighborhood are generally used as a battery shop in the winter. Your battery dead? Just boost the one on the car nearest your car...my old '82 Volvo lost an average of 3 batteries a year...we've gotten a little more gentrified in the area, but occassionally, I still see battery boxes strewn about in the broken window glass.
Any one with any ideas??? Who can check out an older alarm system???
Thanks in advance for any info or advice you may have.
