Crankcase breather? 1800 1972

On the left side of the B20F, located just below the head and coming out of the block is a small chamber (shapped like the proflie of a wing) with a hose attached that leads off near the airbox. After conciderable serching through my manuals all i could find out is that I am pretty sure that this is called a crankcase breather. Other that what it's name implies, what is it's purpose and how dose this system affect the rest of the engine's systems (if at all). Thanks for any input. I'm just trying to figure out more of what exactally is going on under my hood.

Thanks,
Turbozamboni
