Vacuum leak detection--bad manifold gasket? B230FT 700 1988

Hey all:

I believe I have diagnosed a rough idle problem to a vacuum leak. I have been using a section of small rubber hose to listen for a telltale hissing in the intake system, and seem to have located something under the intake manifold. The problem is I cannot pinpoint anything--there seems to be a general hissing and nothing seems to change or disturb it--moving hoses, holding a finger on a seam, etc. I would guess that the problem may be a general leak in the intake manifold gasket along the bottom. Is this a problemmatic area, of am I simply hearing the rushing of air through the manifold or bypasss hose? No other part of the pypass hose makes much noise, however. Anyone with a similar experience?
Thanks!

-Steve
