Looks like the AC compressor replacement got dropped on my plate. Need advice. 700

Hello. The AC compressor in my 1988 744 Turbo froze a few days ago. We brought it to a mechanic and he wanted 645 to do the repair. So, the answer is no. I plan on putting in a new/used one soon and I'd like to know what to do. Are the used ones ok to use? The mechanic seemed to think you need to replace the whole AC system, but can't I just pull the compressor and put in a new one? What procedure should I follow? Thanks so much.
