Steering rattle 200 1984

When I go over some bumps, my steering rattles. I also noticed that it is possible to move the steering wheel forwards and backwards just barely, but I can't tell whether that is part of the problem or if little play is normal. I initially thought the steering wheel was loose, but I can't see anything that appears loose. I was told there could be a bad u joint in the steering; I am basically wondering whether a bad u joint could cause movement in the steering wheel? I am a little perplexed. Thanks
