travel a buck 50 a day in Iowa without a speedometer 700

Thanks to sound advise I was able to fix my 87 740 instrument cluster problem.
The other problem that's been bothering me but haven't figure out yet is my speedometer stopped working in my 87 740 GLE wagon about 20K ago. It was working fine at 200K than it started acting intermittently erratric. Eventualy it went out pretty much all the time unless I kicked it up to 80mph. Than it would kick back in for a while. I read F/A and checked the sending unit in the rear end and it seemed OK(wiring seemed sound) and tryied to remove it but it was pretty rusted on and I started turning the housing that it sat in so I left it. Since than it has come back on even at high speeds but that fact maybe meaningless. some of the questions that I have ar, Can I take the rear housing off the rear end to get at the sending unit and adjust it properly?, I have a 86 parts car would that unit work?, Is there a specific test that I can do to see if the unit thats in there is good? or maybe I should be looking at the actual speedometer? Thanks for everyones help and I hope I can do the same.
