G.M. Alternator problem 140-160

I am having a problem with the GM alternator on my 68 142. Some welding was done on the car with the positive disconnected,I believe this was a wrong thing to do, battery dead next day. Installed another battery, 15.05 vdc at idle, installed a good used alternator, same voltage? Is this normal for this type of installation?
