Lacquer thinner in AW71L 900 1991

I posted a message recently about trouble I have been having with lock up function of the torque converter on my 91 940GL (b230f & AW71L). One post suggested the use of lacquer thinner as a method of cleaning out the valves etc.
I have a bottle of mineral turpentine in the garage. Can I just use that instead of thinners? Or does it HAVE to be lacquer thinner? Am I risking damage if I use the turps?

Thanks for any input.

Brad
