1990 740 check engine light

the check engine light was on and the car had a small hesitation. we changed the 02 sensor, disconnected the battery and the light went out and it ran much better. after driving it for a few miles the light came back on and the car started running worse than it did before. also, for a side not the 02 sensor was caked with sut. thanks
