Overdrive on 245 Wagon 200 1983

Lately when I start my 83 Wagon the OD off light comes on and sure enough, the overdrive is off. The problem is that when I push the OD button on the shifter, nothing happens and I'm stuck with the OD off and high RPM's the whole time. My mechanic isn't sure what to do. Any ideas?
