240 dies then comes back to life 200 1982

Frustrating problem. 82 240 sedan k-jet. every now and then it won't start or will die and then not start. I've replaced the pre-pump assy thinking it was related to the noise in the tank. Well, noise is gone but still have the intermittent dying. I ordered a new fuel pump relay but haven't installed it yet - new one reads 12v 30amp on cover (green) and my cuurent one is brown and says 12v 15amp on cover - should it matter? Just spent an hour tracing wires and checking voltages - had no spark as well. there was a loosewire at the alt. black in color (could have been repaced at one point) on the outside closest to fender. today was about 65 degrees outside earlier instances have ranged from 30 to 50 degreed. once it died after it was warmed up most other times just wouldn't start or hrad start in the morning. lo and behold it starts now and runs fine...but for how long? any help would be greatly appreciated. one other thing. i've noticed lately that the ignition switch doesn't automatically go back to the 2nd dentent after starting i have to turn it back a little to get the wipers or radio to work after the car is running- related issue?
