Preventing rust after skinning paint 200 1983

My son is determined, apparently, to destroy the 1983 GL we acquired for his use. Last night, he bashed the front right corner into part of our garage. The damage to the car included pulling the bumper down and away a little bit, ripping off a piece of molding at the top of the bumper on the side, and creasing the body panel slightly in one place and skinning the paint in some areas, I think to the bare metal, but it could be primer. I refuse to fix the body panel or bumper at this stage, but want to prevent rust. Is it possible to simply sand the affected area down, sand lightly into the adjacent, undamage areas, then prime and paint with some primer and paint from a place like O'Reilly's? Or is there a better way that doesn't cost a lot?
