On time payment protection devices 900 1992

Hi, I just recently purchased a 1992 960 wagon and because my credit leaves a bit to be desired, the car lot put an on time payment protection device on it

well, the car died as I was driving down the road and refused to start again

I towed it to the mechanic and he feels this device might have been the culprit and that it did other damage in the process
he's still getting to the bottom of it, but I was wondering if anyone here has any information on this device?
