How to Tell a Good Bushing from an Infidel 200

Funny title, but serious posting.
How can I tell if a bushing is ok? For instance, with sway bars, the pancake-shaped bushings have perpendicular cracks. What's the cut-off to get rid of them?
Is there a functional test I can use, rather than just inspection?
