Something's Going On (poor gas mileage + odd smell) 200 1987

I have an 87 240 DL that has had a good amount of problems in it's time with me. Some of them have been solved by a new fuel pressure and a new O2 sensor, but it seems to be going to the wayside again. Lately it's been stalling (in extreme cold just after startup) running kinda rough, getting terrible gas mileage (worse than the usual 15/16 mpg it gets) and it's putting off a weird smell. I'm thinking it's running rich. Also it may be helpful to know that my preheater hose vanished and I haven't addressed that problem yet. I keep reading about checking for vacuum leaks, but where/how should I check them?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I hate blowing money on gas.
