850 check engine light 1996

I have a '96 850 GLT. The check engine light has been coming on for about a week. It comes on when the car is started and stays on for about 2 minutes and then turns off. I looked in my owners manual and it said the light will do this every 10,000 miles and you should take it into the dealer. How do I diagnose the problem if there is one and also turn the light off if there is not a problem? My wife and I are driving to California from Seattle in a week and I want to make sure the car is going to run well. thanks in advance for the help. I love Volvo's and this website.
