tire rack tires 200 1991

I tried to order 2- Yokohama Avid Touring 185/70SR-14 tires from Tire Rack; however, they would not sell me that size tire for my car (’91 245). The rep. said, although Volvo recommends this size tire for the car, the car should have this Yokohoma tire a size 205/70/14. He said something about load – I had no idea what he was talking about. The car has always had 185/70/14 Michelins. However, the Michelins are very, very expensive and they don’t last. I have had 3 or 4 of these tires develop eggs.

My question is will these larger tires be OK for my car? And, since I can afford only 2 tires at a time (I’m a poor student) do I put the larger tires on the front or rear of the car. The rep. said to put the larger tires on the back and the old, smaller tires on the front.
As always – thanks for the help

Molly
