What year was R-Sport Created?

Hey all, I was just wondering what was the exact year Volvo's R-Sport division was created? I hear that it was sometime in 1976 or sometime in the late 70's. Or was it 1980/81? Does anyone have an exact date on this? I am just curious as to the history of Volvo "R" and when it was first created.
