1982 clutch slipping 200

The clutch on my 82 GLT slips when I rev the engine above 2000 revs. Seems ok before that but then I see the tach jump and hear the engine rev. Could this be an adjustment problem. I removed a return spring that had been added to the clutch some time ago. The manual doesn't call for it and it made it difficult to adjust. Should I put it back on?
