Re:Transmission Trouble 900 1991

I have a 1991 940 turbo.it has about 95k on it,and has run fantastically well for the three years that i have owned it.however......of late it has been having a problem when put into reverse.sometimes all is as it should be and other times it judders like crazy and kinda lurches backwards.
i took it to my regular mechanic, who only deals with volvo and saab, who thinks that the transmission needs to be replaced.....as an outside chance he suggested a transmission flush.i had this done and for a while the problem went away.however,i noticed that if i drive for more than a few miles the lurching situation manifests itself again.
needless to say,i'm pretty confused about all of this.i totally trust my mechanic, but i can't really afford the price i've been quoted for a new transmission, especially in relation to what i paid for the car/resale price.
i know that the car is otherwise capable of lasting for a lot longer.......so....what i want to know is does this sound like a case for a new transmission,or will having it flushed again make a bigger diference?? valves and hoses have been mentioned,in passing.is this something to look at?? basically,i'm trying to avoid having to pay over $2500.
or am i just being cheap about this??
any help/ideas would be very much appreciated.
thanks
matthew
