I had my idle adjusted by a mechanic back in december (after i did it completely wrong). Afterwards, the car idled at around 1000rpm or a little under. About a month after that, it would occasionally idle at 1500, and other times idle at 750. These varying levels are completely random. It can sometimes happen at startup, and other times happen after i've been driving for an hour.
The idle is typiclally constant during all of this; there is no surging like I saw when my IAC valve was sticking. When the idle is at 1500, I can usually get it to go back down to 1000 by gently revving the engine. This knocks it back down immediately, and keeps it there for 5-10 seconds, after which it goes back up again.
Could this be an IAC problem? I have a spare in a box somewhere that i could try installing. Can i test this using the "pinch off the air hose to the IAC" method?
