940 dl runs for 5 minutes then dies. Please help! 1992

I recently purchased a 1992 Volvo 940DL which I thought was a great deal until I drove it home. Three tow trucks later, I made it home. It will start and run fine until it seems to warm up then it dies and won't restart. Any ideas on what is wrong? I have changed the fuel filter and my next step it to drain gasoline from tank and start fresh. I believe the catalytic converter may be clogged up so I plan on disconnceting it and driving without to see if that helps. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
