Bumper shock modifications 200 1981

I would like to clean up the bumper lines of my '81 245 GLT. It has the extra large, postal truck like bumpers. My plan is to remove the rubber trim, TIG the holes and paint or powder coat. In addition to that I would like to compress the shocks about an inch and MIG them. Any one done this before? Yes I know that the bumper wil be much less effective, but its still more meat than my '70 911 E has. The other choice is to purchase late model bumpers but that breaks my price limit of a 6 pack of PBR.
