I have a 1990 Volvo 760 Turbo that seems to eat alternators. Within the past two years, I have installed four alternators; three aftermarket and one Bosch remanufactured. 5 or 6 months after installation, the Check Engine, SRS and Anti-Lock lights come on when I start the car. When I get the car about 3,000 rpm, the SRS and Anti-Lock lights go out, but the Check Engine light stays on. I’ve run into problems when I make a number of short, suburban driving trips; it’s with those short trips where it seems that the battery isn’t being charged. The battery is about nine months old.
I’ve taken this car to three different repair shops and none of them can seem to find the exact cause of this problem. I’ve had one shop tell me that they found a code indication that there is a short somewhere but they couldn’t find any short in the wiring. I’m at wit’s end. Please help me.
