Intermitant electrical short, how do alternators fail? 200 1988

I've been hunting for an intermitant electrical short all weekend without luck. Twice in the last two days while driving the dashboard "trouble lights" (at the bottom) flicker on and off. At the same time my voltmeter (conected to fuse 1 in the fuse box) drops from normal 14 to 11 or 12 volts. I *think* reving the motor stops it temporarily, but it goes away after a few minutes. The engine runs fine throughout. The battery is newer and is holding 12.75 when disconected.

Where should I be looking? The brushes in the alternator are below spec., would this fail like this? I will replace brushes at the next oportunity anyway. Are there any particular grounds suspect? I've cleaned up all the fuses.
