My 96 965 has started making a noise that has me completely at a loss. It's audible while driving and going over changes in road surface, but it is not dependant on a large bump or pothole. What's odd is, it sounds hollow, like a tubular bracket bumping against something. It appears to come from under the car and from around the gas tank.
I put the car on a lift where I used to work, and Pat (the shop owner) and I went through/over every bushing on the suspension, every mount, the exhaust, wheels, etc... Nothing is loose, it all appears to be in excellent condition.
However, I discovered I could somewhat replicate the noise by whacking the bottom of the gas tank with the palm of my hand. I climbed in the car and shut the doors and listened while Pat bumped the tank, and it did indeed sound like the noise I'm hearing while driving. The only thing I can imagine is a loose baffle in the tank, but is this possible with a plastic tank? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Richard
