Need Opinion on A/C Conversion 200 1987

I was just told by an A/C shop that my '87 240 sedan (200,000 miles) needs a new compressor and receiver/dryer and with that said, it's best to convert the system to R134. He quoted between $900 to $1,100 complete parts and labor. Does anyone know how the 240s are holding up to the R134 system? Is this a reasonable quote? Is there anything in particular I should know about converting to R134, ie, will it cool just as good or better as the original system? The car is in good condition and recently had new front brakes (pads/rotors) and the tranny serviced (tranny was rebuilt 2 yrs. ago). It's appearance is in excellent condition, in and out.
