coolant loss ? 700

where am i losing my coolant from on my 85 760 ?

My gut feeling is that its something to do with the cars heating section, could someone expand on this area for me..... and assist me with tracing the leak in THIS part of the engine ?

what is the function of the heater/water valve?
what exctly happens to the cooling system when i turn on/off the heater in the car ?
