Which cylindrical cap contains the filter in the M46 OD unit? 700 1988

I am servicing the M46OD transmission in my project car. I thought I had read that the filter was under the middle cylindrical cap. After removing the cap I found a small steel ball perched on top. As soon as it saw the chance it bolted from its nest and was quickly making it towards the floor drain before I was able to stop its progress.

I don't need any more surprises this afternoon. Can someone tell me which cap the filter is under?? Thanks.
