Arggh! Tranny making whining noise, sluggish starting out 200

Argh!
Sigh...
1984 245 GLT turbo

We bought it a week ago and now it's whining when put in gear (sort of a high-pitched sighing, whining noise), and it's sluggish off the lineeven at low speeds). The tach outruns the car's speed significantly - in all gears.

Is this a fried torque converter? Or a blown gasket internally? Or worse yet?

NTW: I had the tranny serviced when I bought it and I've heard tell that trannys will get "shock" sometimes when they haven't had a chaneg in years - could this be shock?

Sigh...

Any thoughts?
