Stays In 1st When Cold 200 1989

My '89 240 tranny stays in 1st gear until I get to the McDonald's (about a mile or so). After this first shift, the transmission shifts smoothly for the duration of the day. What's the deal? Any ideas? I think it gets a little better with warm weather (sounds strange).
