Hello, been a while since i've had to post, but as with all older cars......
my 85 740 b230F is having a charging problem. Things I know are ok:
- voltage regulator upon inspection, is allright
- battery and alternator are good.
what happens is the charge rate on measured with a voltmeter at the battery, only rises up to 13.8-14.5 V when the fan clutch kicks in.
if I rev the engine , the belts don't seem to increase in speed until the fan clutch does its "roar" thing. then everthing appears to work/charge as it should.
considering the fan has no direct belt connection to the alternator(the alt runs soley off the front crank pulley), is it a slipping front crank pulley that could be my problem, or the fan clutch?
the problem is more prominent when cold, after warmup, things seem to stick together, all appears ok.
Seems very odd that when the engine is revved up, no increase in belt speed is apparent..is the fan clutch kicking in when the crank pulley decides to "stick together" or does the fan have its own affect on the belt/pulley system?
when fist driving a cold engine, the warning lights on the dash all come on, then fade, then eventually go away. Makes sense after voltmetering the battery throughout the warmup / fan clutch kicking in process..
I haven't done the timing light trick to see if the front crnk plly is "freewheeling" as of yet, but I had a gun on the car a month and a half ago, all seemed well.
your brick wisdom is appreciated!
