Don't get me wrong, I love Crutchfield and wouldn't use any other company for audio gear. It's just that in my search for a good 4" replacement speaker for the front doors that would work with the factory grills, they told me that the Blaupunkt PCx402 speakers wouldn't fit, even with their Volvo adaptor. Their Volvo adaptor is in the same shape as the factory speaker flange, and accepts the OEM grills, which are an odd rectangle shape.
After looking at all of the dimensions, etc., of the PCx402s, I thought that they would work fine, so against the salesman's recommendations I order a pair (and they always include the adaptors free). As it turns out, they worked just fine. The issue is that the flange on the Blaupunkt speaker was slightly too big to fit inside Crutchfield's Volvo adaptor. Apparently Crutchfield assumed you would mount the speaker inside the adaptor, so the adaptor would go between the speaker flange and the door. But I just did it the other way around, mounting the adaptor onto the speaker, so that the speaker flange was in between the adaptor and the door. Sandwiching the speaker this way meant that the adaptor worked perfectly, and the factory grill snapped right onto Crutchfield's adaptor. Boy does it sound better. I don't have power windows, so I don't know for sure if the depth of the PCx402s would interfere with that, but I don't think there would be a problem.
The pair of speakers was only $30. You can get a slightly better pair, the TS402s, for twice as much. I think they are the same dimensionally.
