Recently I acquired four good-condition interior door-panels from a 122 parts car. Three of them were in fine condition and ready to go, but the driver-side front panel backing board was badly rotted out and done-for. I am currently re-backing it with a peice of 1/8" plywood cut-to-match. I've got all my cutting done and I'm ready to go with tacking the vynle to it, but I found that regular staples from the stapler go right through the vynle, the wood, and poke through the front of the vynle on the outside surface. I did a couple of test punches on a portion at the top which would be out of view.

So... my question thrown out there to the group is... if you've done a project like this, what have you found and used to re-tack the covering to a new backing? When I took the vynle off what remained of the last backing, some kind of specialezed upholstery staple must have been used, as those hadn't gone all the way through. The type of standard staples I tried a test with by the way were of the shortest variety available, so it wasn't because they were longer than usual.

Thanks to anybody who might have some tips on this. I'm hoping the answer isn't that I need to take it to an upholstery shop and pay somebody to do it because I can't do it myself!
