M-46 transmission/overdrive separation question 200 1978

I've read a couple of procedures for 'unloading the splines' prior to removing the OD unit from the M-46 transmission. They both involve a functional clutch, which I don't have..it's dumped in an engaged position. Does anyone have any advice on how to remove the tension holding these parts together. I,ve never worked on these parts before, but intend to learn. I understand that reverse and OD are the only gears that don't 'bind'. HELP
