What's the difference between 8 and 12 degrees BTDC? 200 1983

Have been trying to diagnose a strong flat-spot upon adding load of first gear on take-off in this 83 245 with B23. I've assumed the timing was supposed to be 12 degrees BTDC. But upon re-reading the Haynes manual, it recommends 12 degrees for the TURBO and 8 degrees for the NON-TURBO. We have the non-turbo.
Which is the correct timing setting?
Gracias,
El Raidman
