1987 740 GLE Emergency Brake FAQ correction?

I read the FAQ and succeeded in adjusting my handbrake reachable by removing the rear ashtray and plate. I grabbed the farthest most point I could reach with a pair of vicegrips (area nearest front of car) and then with another wrench turned the hex shaped (white and brass) part of "adjustment bolt " (toward back of car) -or whatever it is called- and turned it * counter-clockwise* in order to make my brakes grab more, ie. to "tighten them. This seems to be the opposite of what the FAQ says to do though admittedly one could look at the problem from the front, theoretically. Anyway, did I do something wrong? Also,it appeared to me that the housing got longer as I turned the screw and this "tightened" my brakes - made them grip more. Oddly, this seems counter-intuitive since I would think that if you lengthen the distance you would get more slack, and less grab. Any comments?
What tools do people really use to do this?
