Easiest Way To Remove Gear Shift Lever? 200 1987

Dear Bricksters:

Last question of the day. I would like to replace the stalk (vertical piece) on the automatic gear shift w/a new chrome one from the dealer. The chrome on the one I have is almost all flaked off. Can someone describe the easiest way to do this w/o damanging overdrive switch on the side of the knob, etc.
