89 Volvo 240 shifter clicking in reverse 200 1989

Hi, All

The safety(lockout?) switch broke in my shifter. Now, when I go in
reverse, the shifter clicks. I can also start the car in any gear.
Is this clicking something to worry about? Any tips on what it means,
and how to repair would be greatly appreciated.
