Suspension play question--740 wagon 700 1989

Hi all;

My 1989 740 wagon has front suspension play that shows up in lateral movement over uneven road (The problem is definitely noticeable when changing lanes at HWY speed). The left wheel feels solid in both 3/9 and 6/12 o’clock positions.

But I can feel a small amount of play by shaking top of right wheel with car on the ground. With wheel raised I can’t feel any movement although this could simply be the extra leverage I have with tire on ground. I can feel the play through the strut piston and am suspecting this is where the problem originates. I also took of bearing cap and shook wheel but could not see any movement between axle/hub. Grabbing wheel in 3 and 9 o’clock position does not render any play; tie rod ends seem OK too.

Some history: 120K miles, brand new ball joints and control arm stay bushings + aligned; tires match and evenly worn. Struts are original, as far as I can tell, but no fluid leaking. No other clunking, squeaking noticeable. Sway bar bushing are intact.

I have 2 questions:

1/ Have others noticed worn struts causing lateral movement over bumpy/uneven roads?

2/ Having the struts as old as they are, I may replace them anyway. This is a family car but I want to get good quality struts. I can get Monroe Sensatrac ($150CDN pair) but I see people recommending Bilsteins et al.

BTW, I am in Canada so if anyone has experience with costs getting U.S. parts across border, please advise.

Norm Cook
