M47 II - Very Long Post - Very Big Problems! 200

Sorry for the long post but here it goes.

This morning I went to get some gas and then came back home to get a shower and go to work. I parked at an anlge (don't think it makes a difference). I came back out started the car turned around and noticed a VERY big oily spot. I climbed underneath and saw fluid coming from the back of the transmission. I thought I had blown a seal. I drove 1 mile to work. Got out and checked it again with a flashlight. Fluid was dripping faster out of the back. I checked the rear seal of the tranny and it was a dry as could be. About 4 inches below the Output Shaft (where the tranny attaches to the driveshaft) I saw three cracks that merged into a single point. I immediately got back in & drove it home, so I would not leave it there. I checked it again and the crack had gotten a little more bulged out at the center point.

I know I should have not driven it. I really was not thinking very clearly at all.

I got on the phone with a trustworthy dealership out of town and a parts guy who I have been dealing with over the past 2 years. I told him what happened. He suggested that the Input Shaft had probably started to wobble a bit and punched out the back of the case. That part is replaceable. Just an aluminum cover, plus the gasket, bearings and various other little things. He then checked with a mechanic and was told that if the rear of the Input Shaft was wobbling, it was probably due the the Front of the Input Shaft wobbling. I got a price on a rebuilt transmission. He gave me a very decent price. About $100.00 about his price (mostly to cover freight).

My thought are to replace the transmission, clutch, pressure place, pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, rear main seal, transmission mount and have the drive shaft balanced. I KNOW I am talking about tons of money, but if anyone has any experience/ideas I would love to hear from you.

BTW, I am planning on driving the car (via car hauler-friend has one and offered) to this dealership that is about 4 hours from where I live. The mechanics and people are VERY reputable/honest and good people to do business with. The local dealer could not even find part numbers and prices for a replacement e-prom for my ecu. A few weeks ago, I had to help one of the mechanics with a simple transmission overfill. (I was told the overfill had nothing to do with the hole in the back of the transmission.)

Sorry for the long post. Please, any help or idea would be GREATLY appreciated.

Anyone have a good used M47 II tranny to donate to a nice guy :-)

Todd :-)
