wasn't broke, but I fixed it & now it's 900

AFter reading all of the advice about switching the tranny fluid to syn I did the flush and the switch at about 100k. Shortly afterward I started getting a strange noise.
I've taken the 97 960 to an Indie who cleaned the pan, checked and showed that the screen was clean. He says that a trans specialist has told him that such a switch is bad for the system, "soften things up"?
Well the Indie listened for the noise, but can't figure it out. It sounds like it might be in the trans, but vibrates so much that it also sounds up around the front as well. He could not determine the source and it is intermittent.
Has anyone run into this?
