AW70, works fine.... unless I shift to 1st. 200 1983

The new 244 (83 AW70) has this wierd issue. Transmission and OD work fine but I manually shifted into first the other day and the thing got stuck in first gear, If I ran it all the way to redline, it would sometimes shift to second but then drop right back into first. If I stop the car, put it in park, then back into drive, it works fine again. The kickdown cable appears to be fine at the throttle spool and kickdown works as it should at highway speeds. Any ideas? Linkage? Kickdown cable?
