What to use for undercoating?? 200 1983

had the floor behind the driver's seat replaced but the school-age guys (body shop program) only painted it black underneath. No real undercoat. I wnat to fill in the edges and prevent water from entering. I looked at the spray "rubberized" undercoatings at ManicBoys but it seems too thin.
Using my right-brain, I said "Voila", then went to HomeDepot and picked up a gallon of roofing tar. I plan to spread this out under the floor in a thick layer, let it dry and then drive the car.
What do you BrickBoarders think?
Got any other suggestions?
gracias,
el Raidman
