how often should fuel filter realistically be changed? 200

i know they say 2 years is the standard for changing the fuel filter...but realistically how often do you guys change yours...and after changing is there much of a difference?

Mine has 40 k on it as of now...wondering if i shoudl buy a new one for my 82 kjet.

I guess there is a difference in peoples opinion due to the amount of junk in our gas...that fluctuates due to region and season. I'm in southern california btw:)
