Mysterious thumping noise.... 200 1990

When I arrived home last night, I noticed a thumping noise coming from my engine compartment. It seemed to be coming from the front area of the engine compartment. It was late so I did't investigate any further. Just went out to locate the noise, started the car and now there is no noise?? Strange...

I will keep a length of hose with me in the car in case it starts up again, so I can locate the sound.

After reviewing some of the archives, it looks like it could be a noisy P.S. pump. Any ideas?
